With over two hundred acupuncture points on the outer ear alone, Auricular Acupuncture is one of the more interesting aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine. By inserting small needles into the fleshy part of the ear or by placing ‘ear seeds’ (either tiny magnets or very small mustard seeds) on specific ‘points’ on the outer ear, an electrical signal is sent to the brain, which in turn stimulates the part of the body the point corresponds to. These points correlate with internal organs, channels, collaterals, tissue, limbs and even bones.
The inner ear is never needled and when using ear seeds, the auricular points can be stimulated for much longer than needles, well after your session is over with. The adhesive tape used to keep the ear seeds in place, are also flesh colored, making them hardly noticeable and can be worn for up to five days. They can also be used in conjunction with a traditional acupuncture treatment or like reflexology (acupressure on the feet); a full body treatment can be done, on just the ear alone. With ear seeds, the longer they stay in place, the deeper the healing will be.
